The first video on YouTube was shot by Yakov Lapitsky on April 23, 2005 and features Jawed Kim, one of the founders of the company, talking about animals at the San Diego Zoo. Appropriately titled, “Me at the zoo,” the video was 18 seconds long and was stored on the company’s servers in their headquarters above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. Reminiscent of a typical home movie, Kim says, “The cool thing about these guys [elephants] today is that they have really, really long, um, trunks.” As of March, 2010, “Me at the zoo” had more than 1.7 million views, 12,000+ ratings, and almost 14,000 text comments.
What makes “Me at the zoo” so amazing is not the predictable assessment of really long, um, trunks, or the push to capture special moments (which this video clearly was not), but rather the founders of YouTube empowered users—regular people like you and me—to become the broadcasters of tomorrow, to make their message available to the public in a way that is dynamic and interactive.
